In the recent days, its been noted that employers in Africa are turning to the commission way of payment to their employees, especially those in the sales and marketing department. Their argument is, its a tough economic season and also this is a way of motivating more sales thus bring more revenue to the company.
Well this looks true from the cover point of view but just take a minute to think critically. It goes against all rules of culture code. What employers lack to see is the long game, instead they focus on the current status. Above all, they fail to realize that sales is the backbone of any profit making company literally.
One of the major determining factor of any company's growth is mostly based on the employees. They ought to have a sense of belonging and security, therefore naturally owning the company/ product in question. Commission type of payment trades this great value. The employee will never feel the need to even know exactly what the products entails as long as they make a sale and put some food on the table.
As a result, this kind of work will soon feel exhausting! Soon enough the employer will report a great turnover of employees. Guess what? Loss becomes automatic. The process of getting new employees and training them is a huge cost. To make it worse, sales consistency becomes a nightmare.
Why subject your company to such a terrible roller costa?? Instead, create a safe and stable environment for your employees and keep their productive juices coming. They will sell effortlessly and thus increase profit margins. This is evident in the fortune 500 companies. Other than this factor, there's more to a great culture code but let this be a nice way to start the revolution.
